It all started in the summer when Bobby, an overweight fifteen year old is embarrassed to take his clothes off and swim in the beach because he is embarrassed that people would make fun of his wobbly legs and stomach, yet that isnt the his worst fear. He had taken swimming lessons the last summer, but quit because he started to gain a lot of weight. He tries to ignore the nasty remarks people say about him, but they stay in his mind. He is always making fun of Bobby, but one day he didnt ignore it, he went up to Willie and told him to stop. Willie did stop, but one night when Bobby was walking back home from the lake, Willie rams out of his car and threatens to kill Bobby. No one knows what is going to happen, but Bobby does. He knows what he is going to do. He tells Willie to take a hike and he does. He doesnt get bothered for a week or so because Willie was on vacation. Willie was finally back and holds him hostage at the lake. Bobby was really scared that he was going to get shot by Willies shotgun. Out of no where the lake lifeguard comes out and pushes Willie into the lake and then Bobby jumps in to fight. E. B. Du Bois emphasizes the inequality between the white and African-American populations in the United States of America, demanding a change in the society which suppressed him and his community. He is extremely vocal, and very strong in his opinions on rights, as can be observed in his work â€Å"The Souls of Black Folk.† He mentions many times the consequences of the rampant racism against African-Americans. The consequences he focuses on in particular are those of the social kind. The most prominent ones are that of the false promise, equity vs equality, and the public outreach of African-Americans. Exposing these consequences was a large part of and somewhat the focus of Du Bois’ work â€Å"The Souls of Black Folk.†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Du Bois presents himself in â€Å"The Souls of Black Folk† as an activist who does not want to wait patiently for the rights of the African-American community to become equal. He stood very solid in his stance on change. He wanted it to be quick and focus on the political and social rights, saying that the freed African-Americans could not accomplish anything if they too were not free amongst the society in which they reside. He provides the evidence of the wrongdoings against the African-American society many times throughout â€Å"The Souls of Black Folk,† using that evidence to fuel his argument that the social rights of African-Americans must be demanded. The â€Å"American Dream† has been a common trope for both immigrants and those less fortunate of the centuries that the United States has been in existence. This trope also rang true for the recently freed African-American population. Du Bois acknowledged the existence of this trope, and its falsehood, as he said, â€Å"the freedman has not yet found in freedom his promised land† (Du Bois). This refers to the freed slaves believing that they had now gained the same freedom as their white counterparts, able to begin their new lives as they had. However, this was not the case. The African-American population was given the promise of equality and true freedom, but it was not so. Though this promise was proven to not be true, many African-Americans still believed in it, as Du Bois says, â€Å"Whatever of good may have come in these years of change, the shadow of a deep disappointment rests upon the Negro people,- a disappointment all the more bitter because the unattained ideal was unbounded save by the simple ignorance of a lowly people† (Du Bois). When Du Bois says this, he means that though the African-American people continue to be disappointed with their outcomes, they continue to believe the promise of their freedom. In a sense and in Du Bois’ words, there seemed to be a veil between the African-American and the white societies. The African-American communities attempt to remain ignorant in an effort to retain hope, but in the process become compliant with the society that oppresses them. This is the complacency that Du Bois came to speak against in his work â€Å"The Souls of Black Folk.† He wanted to inspire change and passion in his community, prompting the possibility of obtaining true equality for his people. Du Bois did not want his people to believe the false promise, but instead create their own promise for themselves, inserting themselves as an important part of the American society. It may be said by some that the African-American population did not gain equality, but by definition, they did. However, they did not gain any equity. In order to understand Du Bois’ stance, the definitions of inequality and inequity must be explained. Inequality can be simply described as difference, and inequity can be described as disadvantage or disparity (Berman). Du Bois briefly touches on the idea of equality vs equity, saying â€Å"A people thus handicapped ought not to be asked to race with the world, but rather allowed to give all its time and thought to its own social problems† (Du Bois). When Du Bois says this, he is promoting the idea that those starting out their lives should not be considered the same as those who were more privileged before them, but be given more of a chance to prove themselves. He is acknowledging the presence of disadvantage between the oppressor and the oppressed. By seeing the differences between the white and African-American populations, Du Bois is able to see the inequity, as â€Å"the existence of inequality often highlights an inequitable† (Berman). The easily observable differences between the white and African-American populations brought to light the inequity between the races. The African-Americans are given low and disadvantaged platforms, with much harder work expected of them.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Du Bois acknowledged on occasion that it is much harder for the African-American population to have a louder voice among the public, making public outreach much harder for them. Du Bois sees that it is often difficult for them to properly have their voices heard, as â€Å"some of the best of the critics [are led] to unfortunate silence and paralysis of effort, and others [burst] into speech so passionately and intemperately as to lose listeners. Ultimately, it is hard for the African-American citizens to be heard. Du Bois is stating that they are often pressured into silence, when their opinion and voice would have had a great effect on the community. Thirdly, vision is the most important factor that is considered to impact sensory information. Researchers have been focusing upon the constituent components of visual perception and the need to analyze organized wholes because humans are prone to relate to patterns. Moreover, visual objects have the tendency to remain stable in spite of constantly altering stimulus characteristics such as contrast of figure arrangements, perspectives, and ambient light. This allows observers to relate perceptions of objects with objects as they are understood to be existent. In this regard, perceptions are known to be impacted by values, ideas, needs, expectations and conflicts (Baddeley, 2005). Sensory memory is believed to be the shortest-term component of memory because it retains pictures of sensory information following the ending of the initial stimuli. Sensory memory is also a virtual buffer for stimuli and comes from the five senses of touch, taste, smell, hearing, and vision that are absorbed accurately, although for a brief time. For instance, the accuracy of sensory information is evident from the fact that when we look at something, we remember what it looked like, even if it is observed for a single second. This is an example of sensory memory (Baddeley, 2005). There are a number of factors that contribute to the accuracy of sensory data. Just as it happens in any measurement system, sensory evaluation is also prone to being a source of error. There are factors that impact the accuracy and precision of sensory data and thus lessen its reliability. Psychological factors arise in view of using human subjects as tools of measurement. Despite instructions being issued and training being given by organizers to panelists, a great deal of confusion arises in regard to the details of the instructions and the choice of sensory scales. Thus, there is all likelihood that individual panelist s could have different interpretations of sensory characteristics and intensity levels. Moreover, the decision-making process could also change within the same study, thus creating uncertainties. One Ethical Policy that I would Like to Change If given the opportunity I would like to make some changes with regards to the policy on the â€Å"Misuse of Government-Owned Vehicles or 31 U. S. C.  § 1349†. Since money is scarce nowadays, everyone should be obliged to save; including those in the government and one way to save is not to use government vehicles in unofficial businesses. The punishment should not be just suspension or being fired from work, guilty individuals should also be sent to prison so that they will serve as examples because if the punishment is as â€Å"light† or â€Å"easy† as getting fired or suspended then most employees will not really be prevented to violated this law. Moral Conflict in Antigone Essay -- World Literature Sophocles

The major moral conflict in Antigone by Sophocles is the conflict over which value is most fundamental. The play presents the moral conflict over whether the god's law or the city's law is more powerful. This seems to be the most prominent theme. The conflict arises mainly between the tragic heroes Antigone and her uncle-in-law Creon, King of Thebes. The city of Thebes had been through a war in which Antigone and her sister Ismene have lost both of their brothers to it, Eteocles and Polyneices. Eteocles's fighting for Thebes was buried and honored as a hero. (lines 24-26) Polyneices was left unburied and dishonored because he is considered an enemy of the city. (lines 27-32) Creon edicts that whoever broke the law by burying Polyneices will be considered a criminal. (lines 203-209) The conflict between Antigone and Creon arises when she decides she must honor her brother's death and gives him burial. (line 72) "I myself will bury him," she expressed to Ismene. Once Antigone has buried her brother, she is brought before King Creon to explain her actions. (p. 177) Sophocles presents the two sides of the conflict, moral law versus city law; Antigone expresses the side of moral law and Creon expresses his side with the laws of the city. Antigone begins by telling her sister Ismene it was her duty as a sister that she should bury her dead brother. It is a duty she owes to her family. She also expresses that the king will not "keep me from my own." In other words, duty to the family is above her duty to the city. Antigone also tells Ismene that she is willing to become a criminal and die for her beliefs. She believes her death will not be in vain, and it is honoring her family; and the gods, in turn, will recognize... ...Ismene confronts Creon and tells him she had a part in Polyneices burial. (line 537) She is willing now to join Antigone in her troubles and is not ashamed to admit it. (line 539) She is willing to join Antigone in death. In the case of Ismene, her character is able to resolve the conflict on her own. She realizes she is nothing without her family and Creon's laws have taken her family away. The conflict presented in Antigone involves all the characters and tragic heroes. Whether its internal conflict or conflict between two people, the theme is present throughout the entire play. 1. 1 Describe the Policies and Procedures of the setting relevant to promoting Children and Young People’s positive behaviour. Every setting should have a behaviour policy, in England, it is a legal requirement for early years setting. This is a document to promote a positive behaviour of children and adults involved in the setting, it will help all staff to know what we should do in different situations.As a part of this policy there will also be procedures for staff to follow, such as, showing respect to children and other adults or, giving a explanation to the child who is finding it difficult to observe boundaries or, being a positive role model with appropriate behaviour. Also, the policy should detail the strategies that will never be used in the setting. The codes of conduct relate to the behaviour of staff as well as the behaviour of children. These must be managed in a manner appropriate for children age, stage of development and individual needs.For the staff, the co de of conduct will include, for example, keeping calm to stop children hurting each other or behaving in a unsafe way, such as, listening to both sides of the story in a conflict or, not make any negative comments in front of the children. For children, the codes of conduct are about playing safely, respecting others or taking turns. These codes are discussed with children making a Golden Rules, for example, please walk no running or we should share toys with our friends; this helps them to take responsibility for their behaviour and they feel part of the process.To support children’s positive behaviour we will use Rewards, it is based on the idea that, if they receive approval, they are likely to want to repeat that behaviour There are many types of rewards that work well with children. Praise is a very effective way of reinforcing positive behaviour, saying to children ‘well done’ or ‘good boy/girl’ helps them to know that they have shown positive behaviour and stating clearly what it is that is good, e. g. ‘Thank you for sharing the toy, that was very kind’. Attention is one of the best ways of reinforcing positive behaviour.Making eye contact, smiling or nod, it helps the child to know that we have seen what they have done. In my setting, at the end of each session, teachers ask children who has followed the golden rules that day and they get a smiley face. The children are invited to sit in the fairytale chair or on the fairytale step. Sanctions will help us to respond to inappropriate behaviour. For example, saying ‘no’ in a quiet but firm way or, explaining the consequences of actions to their level of understanding helps children to understand why they must no carry on with their behaviour.Rewards and Sanctions should be used appropriately and fairly. For dealing with conflict and inappropriate behaviour we may use different strategies to show that we can manage that situation. For example, ign oring the behaviour, if children are not getting any response from the adult, they will then change what they are doing, when they stop that behaviour we must give them plenty of positive attention. To removal equipment, this sends a message to children that what they are doing is not acceptable or safe. Also we can use facial expression to make children realise that what they are doing is not acceptable.Guidance on inclusion will be a tool to collate all policy relating to all children with additional needs as Special Education Needs or, Gifted and Talented, also the nursery has a policy of having available to all, a variety of items which reflect the cultural diversity of our country. The nursery displays many pictures and posters of children and people from all areas of the world to reflect the inclusion policy. There are many puzzles and other materials available which reflect our diverse society. We want children recognise that certain actions are right and that other are wrong .Children must be encouraged to recognise that bullying, fighting or hurting are not acceptable behaviour and they will not be tolerated. Anti-bullying policy is to ensure that children learn in a safe, supportive and caring environment, without fear of being bullied. Bullying is a complex issue and takes many forms (racial, sexual, disability,†¦ ). It can be physical, verbal or emotional and can be cause serious psychological damage. A child often bullies for a reason, it is important to try to find out why a child may be bullying others, usually a child that is bullying has some personal difficulty that needs addressing.Biting policy will follow in the event of a child being bitten. Biting is a form of behaviour that is particularly prevalent in children whose language skills are only just developing and can often be an expression of frustration because they cannot yet express their feeling and it can become a habit. In this cause we must act immediately, to explain to the bi ting child why biting is unacceptable, that it hurts the other child and show the mark. Remove the biting child from the circumstances and keep him busy at all times.
