Ethical Policies Essay The first one I have chosen is technically referred to as ââ¬Å"Bribery or 18 USC à § 201-Type Violationsâ⬠is a law implemented to any individual who puts forward, pledges, or gives anything to a ââ¬Å"public officialâ⬠to pressure, manipulate, or persuade any ââ¬Å"official actâ⬠(Department of Defense, 2006, n. p. ). It is a law which prohibits any ââ¬Å"public officialâ⬠to insist, ask for, or accept anything in exchange of performing an ââ¬Å"official actâ⬠(Department of Defense, 2006, n. p. ). The second is technically known as ââ¬Å"Conflict of Interest or 18 USC à § 208-Type Violationsâ⬠, which prohibits any person working for the ââ¬Å"executive branch of the United States Governmentâ⬠or any ââ¬Å"independent agency of the United Statesâ⬠to play a part in the endorsement, authorization, censure, rendering of advice, arrest, contract, wherein he or she has a financial interest in (Department of Defense, 2006, n. p. ). Last but not least is technically referred to as ââ¬Å"Misuse of Government-Owned Vehicles or 31 U. S. C. à § 1349â⬠, which disallows the use of government-owned vehicles in ââ¬Å"unofficial businessâ⬠, meaning, transactions/travels/etcetera which are not authorized by the government (Department of Defense, 2006, n. p. ). Examples An example of ââ¬Å"Bribery or 18 USC à § 201-Type Violationsâ⬠is this: ââ¬Å"A man who wanted to his visa to another country be approved as soon as possible and so he offered money and jewelries to the officer in charge of the approval and issuance of visa and because the officer in charge accepted it, he was charged with briberyâ⬠(Department of Defense, 2006, n. p. ). On the other hand, an example of ââ¬Å"Conflict of Interest or 18 USC à § 208-Type Violationsâ⬠is this: ââ¬Å"A caterer, who is the wife of the mayorââ¬â¢s secretary, has been allowed to cater for the dinner meeting at the mayorââ¬â¢s office; the secretary ought to be charged here because he used the office the mayor to enter into contract with his wife, which apparently shows conflict of interestâ⬠(Department of Defense, 2006, n. p. ). Finally, an example for the ââ¬Å"Misuse of Government-Owned Vehicles or 31 U. S. C. à § 1349â⬠is this: ââ¬Å"A regional director uses the government vehicle even after office hours to go to the casino, meet with realtors, or attend Rotary Club meetingsâ⬠(Department of Defense, 2006, n. p. ). Possible Fines/Punishment for the Violation Meanwhile, if an individual is proven guilty with the first violation that I have chosen first, which is technically referred to as ââ¬Å"Bribery or 18 USC à § 201-Type Violationsâ⬠, the person may be obliged to pay a fine or he or she may be sent to prison for two (2) years or less, or he or she could be made to pay for the fine and at the same time may also be sent to prison (Cornell University Law School, n. d. , n. p. ). Similarly, if an individual is proven guilty with the second violation that I have discussed briefly, which is technically known as ââ¬Å"Conflict of Interest or 18 USC à § 208-Type Violationsâ⬠, the person may be obliged to pay a fine or he or she may be sent to prison for one (1) year or less, or he or she could be made to pay for the fine and at the same time may also be sent to prison (Department of Defense, 2006, n. p. ). With the last violation discussed, ââ¬Å"Misuse of Government-Owned Vehicles or 31 U. S. C. à § 1349â⬠, if an individual is proven guilty of it, he or she is given one (1) month suspension or more depending on how bad oneââ¬â¢s case is (Department of Defense, 2006, n. p. ). A person proven guilty of the aforementioned may also be ââ¬Å"removed from officeâ⬠(Department of Defense, 2006, n. p. ). One Ethical Policy that I would Like to Change If given the opportunity I would like to make some changes with regards to the policy on the ââ¬Å"Misuse of Government-Owned Vehicles or 31 U. S. C. à § 1349â⬠. Since money is scarce nowadays, everyone should be obliged to save; including those in the government and one way to save is not to use government vehicles in unofficial businesses. The punishment should not be just suspension or being fired from work, guilty individuals should also be sent to prison so that they will serve as examples because if the punishment is as ââ¬Å"lightâ⬠or ââ¬Å"easyâ⬠as getting fired or suspended then most employees will not really be prevented to violated this law. Moral Conflict in Antigone Essay -- World Literature Sophocles
The major moral conflict in Antigone by Sophocles is the conflict over which value is most fundamental. The play presents the moral conflict over whether the god's law or the city's law is more powerful. This seems to be the most prominent theme. The conflict arises mainly between the tragic heroes Antigone and her uncle-in-law Creon, King of Thebes. The city of Thebes had been through a war in which Antigone and her sister Ismene have lost both of their brothers to it, Eteocles and Polyneices. Eteocles's fighting for Thebes was buried and honored as a hero. (lines 24-26) Polyneices was left unburied and dishonored because he is considered an enemy of the city. (lines 27-32) Creon edicts that whoever broke the law by burying Polyneices will be considered a criminal. (lines 203-209) The conflict between Antigone and Creon arises when she decides she must honor her brother's death and gives him burial. (line 72) "I myself will bury him," she expressed to Ismene. Once Antigone has buried her brother, she is brought before King Creon to explain her actions. (p. 177) Sophocles presents the two sides of the conflict, moral law versus city law; Antigone expresses the side of moral law and Creon expresses his side with the laws of the city. Antigone begins by telling her sister Ismene it was her duty as a sister that she should bury her dead brother. It is a duty she owes to her family. She also expresses that the king will not "keep me from my own." In other words, duty to the family is above her duty to the city. Antigone also tells Ismene that she is willing to become a criminal and die for her beliefs. She believes her death will not be in vain, and it is honoring her family; and the gods, in turn, will recognize... ...Ismene confronts Creon and tells him she had a part in Polyneices burial. (line 537) She is willing now to join Antigone in her troubles and is not ashamed to admit it. (line 539) She is willing to join Antigone in death. In the case of Ismene, her character is able to resolve the conflict on her own. She realizes she is nothing without her family and Creon's laws have taken her family away. The conflict presented in Antigone involves all the characters and tragic heroes. Whether its internal conflict or conflict between two people, the theme is present throughout the entire play. Supporting Positive Behaviour
1. 1 Describe the Policies and Procedures of the setting relevant to promoting Children and Young Peopleââ¬â¢s positive behaviour. Every setting should have a behaviour policy, in England, it is a legal requirement for early years setting. This is a document to promote a positive behaviour of children and adults involved in the setting, it will help all staff to know what we should do in different situations.As a part of this policy there will also be procedures for staff to follow, such as, showing respect to children and other adults or, giving a explanation to the child who is finding it difficult to observe boundaries or, being a positive role model with appropriate behaviour. Also, the policy should detail the strategies that will never be used in the setting. The codes of conduct relate to the behaviour of staff as well as the behaviour of children. These must be managed in a manner appropriate for children age, stage of development and individual needs.For the staff, the co de of conduct will include, for example, keeping calm to stop children hurting each other or behaving in a unsafe way, such as, listening to both sides of the story in a conflict or, not make any negative comments in front of the children. For children, the codes of conduct are about playing safely, respecting others or taking turns. These codes are discussed with children making a Golden Rules, for example, please walk no running or we should share toys with our friends; this helps them to take responsibility for their behaviour and they feel part of the process.To support childrenââ¬â¢s positive behaviour we will use Rewards, it is based on the idea that, if they receive approval, they are likely to want to repeat that behaviour There are many types of rewards that work well with children. Praise is a very effective way of reinforcing positive behaviour, saying to children ââ¬Ëwell doneââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëgood boy/girlââ¬â¢ helps them to know that they have shown positive behaviour and stating clearly what it is that is good, e. g. ââ¬ËThank you for sharing the toy, that was very kindââ¬â¢. Attention is one of the best ways of reinforcing positive behaviour.Making eye contact, smiling or nod, it helps the child to know that we have seen what they have done. In my setting, at the end of each session, teachers ask children who has followed the golden rules that day and they get a smiley face. The children are invited to sit in the fairytale chair or on the fairytale step. Sanctions will help us to respond to inappropriate behaviour. For example, saying ââ¬Ënoââ¬â¢ in a quiet but firm way or, explaining the consequences of actions to their level of understanding helps children to understand why they must no carry on with their behaviour.Rewards and Sanctions should be used appropriately and fairly. For dealing with conflict and inappropriate behaviour we may use different strategies to show that we can manage that situation. For example, ign oring the behaviour, if children are not getting any response from the adult, they will then change what they are doing, when they stop that behaviour we must give them plenty of positive attention. To removal equipment, this sends a message to children that what they are doing is not acceptable or safe. Also we can use facial expression to make children realise that what they are doing is not acceptable.Guidance on inclusion will be a tool to collate all policy relating to all children with additional needs as Special Education Needs or, Gifted and Talented, also the nursery has a policy of having available to all, a variety of items which reflect the cultural diversity of our country. The nursery displays many pictures and posters of children and people from all areas of the world to reflect the inclusion policy. There are many puzzles and other materials available which reflect our diverse society. We want children recognise that certain actions are right and that other are wrong .Children must be encouraged to recognise that bullying, fighting or hurting are not acceptable behaviour and they will not be tolerated. Anti-bullying policy is to ensure that children learn in a safe, supportive and caring environment, without fear of being bullied. Bullying is a complex issue and takes many forms (racial, sexual, disability,â⬠¦ ). It can be physical, verbal or emotional and can be cause serious psychological damage. A child often bullies for a reason, it is important to try to find out why a child may be bullying others, usually a child that is bullying has some personal difficulty that needs addressing.Biting policy will follow in the event of a child being bitten. Biting is a form of behaviour that is particularly prevalent in children whose language skills are only just developing and can often be an expression of frustration because they cannot yet express their feeling and it can become a habit. In this cause we must act immediately, to explain to the bi ting child why biting is unacceptable, that it hurts the other child and show the mark. Remove the biting child from the circumstances and keep him busy at all times. We will always inform the parents about the incident and should keep confidentiality.Attendance policy is usually part of a schoolââ¬â¢s code conduct because childrenââ¬â¢s education can be affected if they do not attend regularly or are often later for lessons, being absent from the school means a lost learning opportunity. To ensure that each child is encouraged to attend from the first day that they enrol at reception. However, in an early years setting, this is not likely to be part of a behaviour policy. In any case, there must be a time control input and output. 1. 2 In your own words describe what your setting behaviour policy expects from adults and children.In my setting we believe that children grow up best when their personal, social and emotional needs are met and where there are clear expectations fo r their behaviour. The aim is to teach children to behave in socially acceptable ways and to understand the needs and rights of others. To help children to learn to empathise with others, understanding that they have feelings too. Where children behave in inconsiderate way, we help them to understand the outcomes of their action and support them in learning how to cope more appropriately.All staff, volunteers and students must provide a positive role model of behaviour by treating children, parents and one another with friendliness, care and courtesy. Also we must use positive strategies to resolve any inconsiderate behaviour, by helping children to find solutions in ways are appropriate for their age and stage of development. We must be calm and patient helping to manage childrenââ¬â¢s feelings. 1. 3 Describes with examples the importance of all staff consistently and fairly applying boundaries and rules for children and young peopleââ¬â¢s behaviour.It is very important that all staff consistently and fairly apply boundaries and rules for childrenââ¬â¢s and young peopleââ¬â¢s behaviour. For example, if we want to teach children that they must eat sitting and not playing, all staff must apply the same rules every single day in the lunch time, not allowing toys and remind them to sit down when they stand up, because if children with a staff member can run and play while they eat but with another member they must eat sitting. They are confused about this change in the rules from one day to another and they cannot know which behaviour is the correct.

Equality of Life in Kurt Vonneguts Works - 1074 Words
Equality of life Will Rogers once said ââ¬Å"We will never have true civilization until we have learned to recognize the rights of others.â⬠This quote is what we should strive for in reality but in Kurt Vonnegutââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrowâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Harrison Bergeronâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"All the Kingââ¬â¢s Horsesâ⬠this is the exactly the opposite of what occurs in his stories. In ââ¬Å"Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrowâ⬠, the earth is overcrowded, people live forever, the same politicians have been in office forever and no one recognizes each otherââ¬â¢s rights. In ââ¬Å"Harrison Bergeronâ⬠the people of America donââ¬â¢t even have any rights; they are ââ¬Å"equalâ⬠in all aspects of life and in ââ¬Å"All the Kingââ¬â¢s Horsesâ⬠people are being used as chess pieces and not as human beings.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radi o in his ear because he was too intelligent. They are both killed by the Handicapper General after they kiss. In the short story, Pi Ying tells Kelly that chess games, like battles, can very rarely be won without sacrifices and that, philosophically, and that the game he is required to play is no different.
